Women in Sport and Women’s Aid said:
“We are devastated to hear about the horrific killing of Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei by her former partner. It’s a tragic reminder that domestic abuse can and does infiltrate all parts of society, including women celebrated for their achievements in the world of sport and beyond. We know that misogyny lies at the root of male violence against women and girls and it is a devastating truth that all too often a woman’s success can be seen as a motivating factor for their perpetrator’s actions. There is never an excuse for abuse and we must urgently come together to protect women and girls from unthinkable acts of male violence like this.
Our thoughts are with Rebecca’s children, family and friends at this time. We hope that this incident will be treated with the seriousness it deserves to achieve justice and signal to perpetrators around the globe that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated.”
