TRT World: Spanish football’s sexism scandal

12th September 2023

After weeks of pressure, Luis Rubiales, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation has resigned following allegations of sexual assault.

After Spain’s win against England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Rubiales kissed one of the Spanish female players, Jenni Hermoso, without her consent.

The kiss was the tip of an iceberg that has gone on to expose systemic issues within the Spanish federation. Just last year, 15 players from the women’s team said they would not play during the World Cup unless their coach Jorge Vilda resigned.

Since then, top dogs Vilda and Rubiales have left, but the state of Spanish football is left unclear as more than 80 Spanish players – women and men – have paused their play in support of Jenni Hermoso.

To discuss this issue, our Head of Communications and Engagement, Sarah Bellew appeared on a roundtable for TRT World to discuss the incident and what it means for the wider context of sexism and misogyny in sport.
