Stand with Women in Sport this International Women’s Day

Published

International Women’s Day isn’t just a date in the calendar that comes and goes every year. It’s a chance to reflect on the progress we’ve made and to accelerate action towards equality for women and girls in sport.

Since our charity was founded in 1984, we’ve been campaigning for a society where no woman or girl is excluded from the joy, fulfilment and lifelong benefits of sport. We’ve come a long way, but early stereotyping, institutional bias and entrenched misogyny continue to hold us back.

Despite incredible strides in women’s sport, and an epic summer of sport approaching with the UEFA Women’s Euro and Women’s Rugby World Cup, our research paints a worrying picture. Too many girls still can’t dare to dream in sport, held back by systemic barriers we must break down.

By supporting our charity through fundraising, taking on a challenge event or run, or starting conversations around women and girls sport within your network, you can be part of our movement.

What can I do?

Here are just some of the ways you can champion women and girls in sport this International Women’s Day:

  1. Make a donation: Every penny gets us one step closer to a brighter, more equal future for women and girls in sport. As an added bonus, every donation made towards our target of £40,000, before the end of March will be matched by one of our generous donors.
  2. Run for us: Take on a 5K, 10K, half, or marathon to raise awareness for our cause and raise money for our charity. We have access to hundreds of discounted race slots across the UK so whatever kind of challenge you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered.
  3. Unite the movement: Whether it’s a sports tournament, a women’s sport themed pub quiz, or a classic bake sale, there are lots of ways to get your friends, family or colleagues  involved in helping to support our cause. Find out more about fundraising for Women in Sport.
  4. Use your voice: To drive system change we need to work with and through government. Show your support for challenging gender inequality in sport this International Women’s Day by writing to your local MP using our free letter template. Want to spread the word even wider? Follow us on social media and share our research, campaigns and policy asks with your networks.
  5. Stay connected: keep up to date with our research, campaigns and policy work to hear more about our impact by signing up to our newsletter.
